DUE TO OVERWHELMING SPAM ATTACKS I AM CLOSING MY ALBUM AND PHOTO MESSAGES. FRIENDS ONLY CAN POST COMMENTS. THIS IS VERY, VERY SAD that we have to go to such lengths to be protected from spammers. If you are having the same problem, you should complain to webshots - I wonder what steps are being taken to protect us from these infuriating attacks??!!!!

Hurricane Ike Update: Finally we got power again!!!!!!!!!!Neighbors were dancing in the street, and hooting and hollering, even as dead tired and exhausted as everyone is...what a joy to have the aircon blowing again...and TV and a fridge(and lets not forget internet!!))!!!Houston has 4 Million People and 2.2 Million Households (=over 4.5 Million People were out of power the day after the hurricane hit) After 2 weeks still one of 5 Homes was without power, now after 3 weeks about 150,000 Homes are in the dark here around Houston area...THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH AGAIN FOR YOUR PRAYERS!!! I will try slowly to catch up with the last 4 weeks messages...PLEASE be patient..I can only a remember few times in my life that I've been in such a state of mental and physical exhaustion.I want to just nothing but sleep under the ircon for a few days..but we are still housing friends without power..and spending time volunteering. First estimates show that over 100,000 homes have been either destroyed or made uninhabitable, that estimate is bound to rise, the tragedy is great, OVER 400 PEOPLE ARE STILL MISSING....!!Please keep sending your prayers...Love Marita

HURRICANE IKE UPDATE (See below): We are still without power(internet) and services. Thx deeply for all your prayers and messages of concern. And especially thank you Leslie, Bisquitzoe, for your suprising,sweet and uplifting calls. Munchie & I came "out of the closet" stirred and very shaken after 8hrs of the longest and most frightening night in my life. The eye of the hurricane was over 50 miles (75KM) wide and passed right over our town on the eastern outskirts of Houston. The winds surrounding the eye were horrific 1 1/2 hrs while the first eyewall passed us, 2 hrs of dead calm while in the eye and 2 hrs of worse winds from the other side of the eyewall. We had lost power around midnight on the 12.09 and phone service 2 hrs earlier. For those of you who don't know the area: Houston is subtropical swampland, not the arrid barren country you see in the cowboy movies, it is very green here, many huge trees, pines 150ft high (50 Meters), huge old oaks. Although we did not have damages from the storm surge which innundated many of the southern suburbs of houston, wind damage was much worse here (we think winds of 105miles/hr, 150Km/hr). Pines and huge old trees snapped and uprooted everywhere, falling into homes and crushing them or heavily damaging the rooflines, the neighborhoods looked like a bomb went off. Unlike the tremendous amount of people who's homes were rendered uninhabitable or destroyed, luckily damage to our home was minor, cleanup of the debris in our yard and neighbohood has been a fulltime job for the last 10days. The heat and humidity are hard to bear without aircon, the mosquitoes eat us alive. We've not been able to see any news, but have gotten the local paper in recent days. We are finally able to get fresh foodstuff again and ice. Most shops and gas stations are still closed due to no power. People are extremely worn and it reminded me of the movie "the day of the living dead" when I went to the store yesterday and people were walking around like zombies"..

Our damages are mostly of inconvenience and our heart bleeds for and goes out to those people who have lost everything..This experience has been very humbling and frightening...life as we know it has come to a grinding halt for the last 1 1/2 weeks and the pitch black dark nights without power, tv etc have given us ample time to reflect on the important things in life and appreciate the convenience we ordinarily have available to us. I've not been able to read nor will not be able to respond to individual messages at this time but thank you so much, you don't know how much it means. Hopefully we'll get power back soon...but so much is to be done here to help get people taken care of and get things a little back to normal...keep us in your prayers...love Marita

Ike is a monsterous huge storm about 500 miles wide (800KM)but at least at this point ONLY? supposed to be a category 3 hurricane(winds of about 115mph (180KM) when it makes landfall 50 miles south of us in Galveston.Munchkin(kitty) and I will hunker down in a closet under the stairs(no basements in Texas) (mike is still in Oregon). Expecting winds to pick up around noon, hurricane strength winds around 6pm today and landfall around midnight and then about 12 more hours of hell. Expecting lots of tornados and rain since we are on the dirty side of the hurricane.Galveston is already under water now from the storm surge which is eventually expected to be 22ft(7 meters)this is just the rise in the sea level, waves are going to be much higher (up to 30ft, 10m) or more around the Galveston Bay. The thought of a 3 story high wall of water innundating the area is beyond immagination, luckily over 1 million people have been evacuated from these areas and more to come in the next half day. And 180Km/110 mph winds I can't even get in my little head...It is very scary. So we'll probably have no power starting this PM..I'll update when it's over. Hugs
