  • Hi! I hate to bother you, but is the video you referred to a few months ago on YouTube still possible to do? You told me way back when that if you had a chance to, you'd try to do it "by the weekend" - that was back in April or so. I haven't seen you on YouTube in a while, and I've written several messages to you that haven't been replied to... :( That's happened a *lot* to me lately, actually... people just do *not* reply to me lately. I don't get it... :(

  • It is next to impossible to rate as they all have special qualities to them. Hopefully you can fine some traits in these descriptions that will make it easier for you to sort out. I would make a list of what is important to you in terms of a macaw and then see which one fits your desires the best or you can be like us and get one of each!! (We will be getting a GW this year).

  • Fresca my husbands Fiesta macaw: Flighted female VOCALIZATION: Very vocal, says a few words but is still very young ATTENTION: She is somewhat demanding of attention but can entertain herself for quite some time as long as there is another macaw around. She is more of a follower and if the flock is looking for love then she is. BITING: Very nippy but no strength behind her bites (yet). She is still learning her beak strength. INTELLIGENCE: She has a very “which way do I go” personality and does a lot of things just to go along with the crowd. One-on-one she is the most dog-like macaw that we own. She is very smart and is already trying to escape from her cage. I think she will be a problem-solver like our B&G. PLAY: Toys last FOREVER. She would prefer to play with whole food items as toys and loves whole corn on the cob, whole bananas, whole peppers, etc and eats as much as she destroys and plays SOCIALIZATION: Wears a harness and is very well behaved in public but is still young and baby-like. Typically prefers my husband but will go to others.

  • Toby my Harlequin macaw: Clipped male, soon to be flighted VOCALIZATION: Very vocal, uses less words but very easy to understand, (could be just age). Sings opera but is way off tune!! Extremely loud and is the loudest in our flock. Only screams during afternoon “sound-off” time or when I am out of sight. ATTENTION: Not as demanding of direct attention but loves his daily snuggle time and loves to be with me when I vacuum and prepare food. Very confident and knows what he wants at all times. BITING: Not very nippy at all (still has his times) but when he does bite WATCH OUT!! Very painful vice-like pain and does not let go very easily. Leaves bruises but his bite does not tend to draw blood. He can crack a macadamia nut (even without all his toes) INTELLIGENCE: Very intelligent in a “street-wise” way. He is always watching and is the alpha bird in our flock (not including) even though he is still unable to fly and is young. PLAY: Toys last less than one day, most less than 30 minutes. Prefers natural toys such as tree branches with leaves and bark still on them and loves being outside in the sunshine. Loves pinecones!!!!!! Very expensive to keep entertained if you prefer buying toys. He is capable of doing much damage in a very short time when it comes to cabinets, furniture, etc. Not really a problem solver in a mechanical sense. Would rather break a toy to get at the treat instead of taking it apart like my B&G SOCIALIZATION: Wears a harness and is somewhat social in public, but would prefer to stay with me. In our home he will go to all family members but is leery of strangers and it takes quite a while before he warms up to someone new. There are exceptions to this rule.

  • Lipton our B&G macaw: Flighted male VOCALIZATION: Very talkative: Sings opera and holds a tune!! Loud but would prefer to yell “mom and ring his bell” rather than use his “macaw voice”. ATTENTION: Very demanding of attention. He will not leave my side for more than a few hours a day. Would prefer to be with humans (me) and in the middle of the action more than outside or anything!! BITING: Semi-nippy with more of a pinch with the tip of the beak. He loves nip and then he says “Oww, that hurts!! and then laughs” His angry bite, although not frequent, typically draws blood. I believe this to be because he uses more of the tip of his beak. INTELLIGENCE: Very intelligent problem solver: Loves to clean out our kitchen cabinets and dump everything to the floor when he feels neglected. He requires locks on all his cage doors as he is able to escape from his cage. Also loves to play peek-a-boo and actually understands the concept and comes looking for me. PLAY: Toys typically last a month or more. He loves problem-solving toys and does not have constant desire to chew wood. Still capable of doing furniture damage but there is a “grace period”; however, he is an expert at taking the keys off of my computer keyboards and can be found taking many things apart if not watched carefully. SOCIALIZATION: Wears a harness readily and is very social in public. Steps up on anybody and is very tolerant of strangers. In our home he goes to all family members but only if there is something in it for him, (treats) or it is his decision. He will socialize with strangers in our home only if he decides that he likes you. Could be the first time he sees you or it may take a few times, or maybe even never.

  • Wow, what a loaded question but I will do my best to answer from my own personal experiences! I think the easiest way for me to do this is to tell you a little bit about each of my macaws individually. Here it goes!!! ~Kimberly

  • Terri and Steve, We are trying to decide which Macaw to add to our family. Our current thinking is either a Blue & Gold, GreenWing or a Harlequin. We've been told that B&Gs and GreenWings (with the exception of maybe a Hyacinth)have the most docile personalities, socialize well with more than one person (although they may prefer one person to another, but won't be mean to others)and aren't as "nippy" as, for example, we're told that a Scarlet tends to be. We noticed that you own a B&G and a Harlequin and wondered if you could provide your thoughts about their personality differences. We understand that each parrot is unique so we also understand that your comments are likley to be generalizations and/or your personal experience. We have a Red Front Macaw (smallest of the large Macaws)and are now looking to move up to the full size. By the way, we got the Red Front from Dee & Gerry (AZ Parrot). Your thoughts and opinions will be valued. How would you rank the personalities from best to less than best? Thanks.

  • Be forewarned... Gerry & I were emailing back and forth a few days ago. We were chatting about Mozart at first and then I asked him if they bred the Milicinth Macaw. He replied and seemed angry that I asked. I didn't mean to make him mad at all, it was just a simple question and he seemed mad that I asked. I told him I thought it was a pretty shade of green, and he disagreed. When I asked if he bred them his response was "Absolutely not! What kind of fool would hybridize a Hyacinth? Especially with a Military?" I replied saying "Why would you say that? You do breed other macaws. Sorry I asked!" I really didn't mean to make him angry. I just happened to run across it on the internet and thought I'd ask.

  • Mozarts shower perch arrived in the mail on Friday and I will get pictures of him in the shower on Saturday. I made a "concoction" late Friday night and it turned out good. Smells good too! Check out the pictures of it! It's now in the fridge and Mozart will get his first taste of it on Saturday afternoon. I sent you an email several days ago asking about the Mex Mix, but I'm not sure if you got that email or not. Are you still going to Dee and Gerry's every Saturday, even though Fresca is home with you now?

  • I added the rest of the pictures from 9/17 that I didn't have time to add last week, and I added some pictures that I took on 9/23. Mozart misses you, I can tell. He paces back and forth and makes noices on the bottom of my bed when ever he is on it. He acts like he is missing someone and I think it's you & your family, Dee's, and all his birdie friends (Fresca). When he first met my Severe Macaw named Oliver on his first night here, Mozart tilted his head and said "hello" to him. It was soooo cute! His nice brand new big playstand arrived on Monday. It has a large ring on top. Will put it together ASAP and add new pictures of him on it.

  • Hi Kim, I added a few pictures of Mozart from Monday night 9/17, his first night home. I'll get more pictures added soon. Terri
