The photo entitled "Mrs Weich", (photo 1171315544034947084fioMnF ) along with all the other photos in the album “Monument Dedication Plus” were taken at the site of The Battle of Summit Springs (July 11,1869). There are several monuments located at the site, which is located “in the middle of nowhere” a number of miles south (I think) of the city of Sterling, Colorado (128 miles northeast of Denver) Directions: Head south on I-76 out of Sterling for 10 miles to the Atwood turn off. From there go south on Colorado highway 63 approximately 5 miles to county road 43 - look for the tiny Summit Springs Battlefield sign. Turn left (east) for two miles to the site. The actual battlefield is on private property but at this time hiking access is okay. The road dead ends at the site and the monuments are located here. We were there for Dedication of the Susanna Alder Dice monument by J Jefferson Broome on July 11, 2004 (135th anniversary of Battle of Summit Springs)On the “Battle of Summit Springs” website, www.ghosttowns.com/states /co/summitspringsbattlefi eld.html states: “On July 11, 1869, Southern Cheyenne Chief Tall Bull along with Heavy Furred Wolf, Pile of Bones, Lone Bear,Black Sun, White Rock, Big Gip, Powder Face and 45 Cheyenne and Sioux men, women and children were killed here by the U.S. Cavalry. ……….. . Amazingly enough only one soldier was wounded and one captive white woman was killed by Tall Bull during the whole battle. Chief Tall Bull was killed by Major Frank North in a gully just east of the camp. Another captive white woman, Mrs. Weichel, was wounded but survived.
