James Perri,
Hi James, the problem as I see it in Roseland, is that the current owners of the stores are there just to make a quick buck. They don't give back anything to the community, they just take. Besides that their stores are dirty and unkempt. I even had a run-in with one of them a few months back...just for taking some pictures. Not inside the store but outside. He was so irate he called the police on me. Picture this, an Arab man dressed in a neon yellow jumpsuit screaming at me in front of his ugly store! I eventually left but not after taking my pictures. Takes all kinds. The people that currently live there don't care, the store owners don't care, unless you're taking their picture...so what do you have. Current day Roseland!
Hello mmcoog,
I love your pics,I grew up at 11925 south perry,
A block from scalon school, across the street from spillers store, now its called perry food store.
this is what happen ,the factories closed, in the 80, all those mills, libbys foods, steelmills,
my pops was a worker for ingosall.
Many families lost out that were middle class they were coming up.
we never could get those jobs back. to keep it going and it hurts !! even to today.
NO !!! ONE !!!! had any faith in Roseland at that point. the mayor or fed goverment,
its funny all the arabs,koreans,
are buying up Roseland now
when made money as a musician in europe
I reinvested in Roseland,
now they say they are closing fenger hs
what do u think,of the future of Roseland ???????
I live in Italy ,I have invested property in Roseland
I didnt give up.
let me know what u think ?????
This is directed to ALL of those people who feel the need to give their version of why "WE" left. Funny I don't recall anyone ever asking me, my family or for that matter anyone I knew why we left. There seems to be this notion that "We" left because Black people moved into our neighborhoods. Let me set the record straight. The truth of the matter is "We" left for a variety of reasons, crime, racism, fear, destruction of property, homes & businesses. It didn't help either that property values plummeted! What was once a peaceful, thriving neighborhood is now a crime-infested ghetto. It's not safe anymore!
Would like to talk to you motre about Roseland. My dad was an owner of Monarch Laundry and I have no pictures of it. Sure would like to find someone with some. My email is tnjack@bellsouth.net.
RE: St. Catherine of Genoa, I've just written an article about Fr. Murphy (pastor) and also his upcoming Ordination anniversary on Sept. 19, 2009
here's the link: www.associatedcontent.com /.../former_parishioners_ of_st_catherine.html
Personal to mckwd, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Feel free to use any of the pictures. FYI, I have nothing to do with selling them on this site.
Personal to John Lenich, sorry I'm a little late in getting back to you. Yes, I definitely remember you and your sister Suzette. For some reason I seem to recall you coming over to our house on occasion. I can even picture your house, right next to Jern's. What a great neighborhood that was! On another note, sorry to hear about your Dad.
Personal to Loris Cardine, Next time you go to Chicago you're welcome to go with me to your old neighborhood. Just so you know, we won't go walking around, it's not very safe. Also, email me at mywaterdr@yahoo.com the next time you come to this website.
Hi everyone, Sorry I haven't been reading the comments lately I've been real busy with my new job. First off, Billyboy I didn't know about Fenger closing. I'll try to go there soon, but I probably won't be able to take pictures of the inside. Public schools, especially the ones on the South Side are well guarded by the police, especially on the inside.
I am sorry to inform everyone who attended Fenger High School, that it will be closing it's doors for the last time this year. It has fallen into a number of Chicago Public School closings slated for this year. This is the plan that was created by the school board that if the school was not meeting education standards, created by the board, then the pupils will be bused to a school with better grade point averages. Maybe Mary can go get a few more shots of the school along with some inside shots, before it is all GONE!
Hi. I found your site while net surfing. We lived at 107th and Wallace until 1971 when we moved to Alsip. I attended Dunne school through 6th grade. My parents are of Dutch descent and had deep roots in Roseland. It got pretty ugly towards the end, such a shame. Thanks for the pics and helping relive some childhood memories.
Hi, I found this digging around on the internet doing searches on Roseland and West Pullman. I grew up in West Pullman, lived on 122nd Princeton, right near West Pullman Park. You sound like you are my age? born in 61? I live in AZ now, since 1987. We moved from West Pullman in 1975. I still have dreams I am in that house. Every trip back home I want to go see the house, and no one wants to go. I love your pics and reading everyones comments. Where do you live now? I'd love to talk to you more on e-mail if you'd like, let me know. Thanks Lori
I found the photos interesting -- but sad. It was once a nice neighborhood. I grew up in the second house on the south side of 126th Place, just across from where you lived. My sister, Suzette, and I both graduated from St. Catherine's. I was sorry to see that your dad died. I remember him fondly. My dad died a couple of weeks ago. It is not easy.
