DEMOLISHED Masonic Temple - Downtown Hammond

Since 1921 a huge, majestic Masonic Temple stood on the corner of Muenich Ct. & Anne Ave. in downtown Hammond. The city decided it cost too much to refurbish and repair over a decade of neglect. It came down in 2009 to make way for a new charter school.

Woodmar Mall

I remember going to Woodmar Mall when I was young. When it had only about 6 stores remaining, it was time for it to go. It's finally coming down to make way for a new redevelopment project. Kinda sad to see it go; there are some memories here...

U.S. 41 Calumet Avenue - Hammond, Indiana

Calumet Theatre, Hammond

Constructed in 1930, the Calumet Theatre was a minor presence compared to Hammond's magnificent movie palaces of the past. It's still standing but is now in a state of disarray. It does have strong potential for redevelopment...in the right hands.

Cabela's in Hammond

The outdoor retail giant built its newest megastore on the former grounds of the Woodmar Country Club. Mayor McDermott's baby has provided a new tourist attraction and will hopefully provide an economic spark. Three of us took a tour, Nov., 2007.

Wright's Barnyard/Hollywood Park - Lansing, IL

The famous fun park shut its doors in December, 2006 after I-94 expansion claimed over 1/2 acre of the property and essentially doomed its future. The 50-year-old park was a daylong funfest for young and old. Now, it's closed.

The End of Schererville Fun Center

Since 1990, the Schererville Fun Center was an oasis of awesome for Calumet Region youth and for the young at heart. 2007 sadly marked the end of the Center. I went there the last two days it was open. Seeing it torn down was a dagger to the heart.
