hi david, thanks so much for taking the time to view and comment on my pics in my sky album. i am so glad you enjoyed them and the feedback is deeply appreciated... one of my most favorite scenry pics to take is of clouds as i am at awe of their beauty. and because you enjoyed them i would like to invite you to view my newest album, my sunsets. as i have tried to capture the beauty i so often see here at webshots from other members and have dedicated this album to all the WS members who have inspired me to give it a try... its kind of a trial and error album as i am hoping to learn what is working for me and appealing to others so i know which direction to take to improve my skills. please feel free to leave any thoughts you might have and i truly hope you find something in this album too that appeals to you. thanks again! have a good day, angie m.

Hi, Thank you so much for you kind comments on my Sepia Challenge entry. It was my very first time to take part in a photo contest and, as a matter of fact, winning the third place came out like a present for my birthday. So thanks again, you guys made my day. Best regards, Tony D.

Part 2: In public corporations, the shareholders vote for the directors and on major issues. In legal courts, juries are used to decide outcomes, and when a judge is selected it is usually because of the defendant's choice and even then can always be appealed. In democracies, the people vote for their leaders. In scientific studies, larger numbers of subjects are used to reduce the possibility of errors. In almost every conceivable contest were winners are selected based on quality criteria, panels or majority voting is used to determine the winners. Dog shows are the only exception that comes to mind, and even the final best in show contest that is judged by a single judge, is done after an extensive process of elimination where all the best in breed and best in show winners from a series of other smaller contests end up in the grand finale. Plus, the dog shows will probably ultimately change their methods too because of the extensive levels of dissatisfaction and obvious political biases in the single judge system. It is really so obvious that the Webshots judging process is inappropriate that it would be almost inconceivable that Webshots would not change the method being used for selecting contest winners... in addition to having categories in the contests for the varying skill levels and image types. That’s how the other progressive photo contest sites do it, and if Webshots refuses, it will hurt their business as the more intelligent members migrate to a more transparent and reasonable methodology of judging member photos. So I think implementing what you have suggested in your comments on multiple categories, coupled with a more appropriate and fair system of judging, will be critical factors in Webshots long term success. We can only hope that they have the wherewithal to recognize good business practice and implement our logical and important suggestions. Thanks for speaking up for the greater good! -Randy

I thought your comment was well worded and very clear. Nice job. Good points! I suspect that Jessica and the Webshots staff think they are being fair by somehow selecting winning photos that represent varying skill levels and varying post processing/editing work, in their selections of winners. But because nobody knows for sure how or if, and because Jessica stated that a single person picked out the winning photos in the last three or so challenges, the process has every appearance of being subject to extreme bias, favoritism, errors, laziness, short-sightedness, etc, etc. Even without looking at the winning photos. Voting by a larger group of people uses the law of averages to reduce the natural built-in bias and a multitude of other flaws inherent in using a single judge or small handful of judges that all work together in the ivory towers. Webshots secret black box approach is really pretty archaic and silly and will only create suspicion, frustration, and an erosion of credibility. (to be continued)

I was able to get a photo of where the sun sets on the horizon for two days in a row, and uploaded a new comparison image tonight. You will not believe how much movement there is in one day! Its amazing!! (MARCH OF THE SETTING SUN album) -Randy

Yea, they added that *collage is OK* rule after using it in the last challenge. But... it turns out that a collage was second place in a Challenge back in March, so I must admit that a precedent had been set. Still, if judging were done by a team of members, I do not think the problem would have reached such large proportions. And the judging process is just inappropriate! Well, the Webshots editor, Jessica, has stated she will give consideration to the suggestions made in the challenge blog. So perhaps it is time to give her a chance to make the improvements we all recommended. But I have no intention of dropping this. I firmly believe there are some needed improvements! And if we do not hear back from Jessica within 30 days (at most), I will start raising heck. A team of members judging and a multi-category challenge are the big issues for me. You? Thanks much for your support! Lets keep in touch on these issues! -Randy PS I just added another comment to the blog, which is here http://blog.webshots.com/?p=673

I am sorry that you feel that way. I assure you that the editors here at Webshots try to be as fair as possible to all our members who enter the creative challenge. When copying and pasting a rule, it's best to include all information - "2. Images with added text or images, including watermarks, logos, copyright symbols, graphic borders, frames and time stamps, will not be considered. Collages, however, are acceptable." Also, in Jessica's response, to clarify the rule "Images with added text or IMAGES, including watermarks, logos, copyright symbols, graphic borders, frames and time stamps, will not be considered. By “added images,” we mean an image that a member may use as their trademark, not a combination of images that form a collage". We hope you continue to submit your photos in our challenges for we enjoy everything our members contribute.

There is fiasco concerning the winners of the latest challenge that is being discussed right now in the Challenge blog, where a collage won when the challenge rules explicitly say that images cannot be added to an existing image. So I think there is an opportunity to improve the Challenge winner selection process here by convincing Webshots to use a team of members to select the winners. How does having recommended the challenge, or being pregnant, or having home town pride make one qualified to be the sole and only judge of who wins? This was the criteria that Jessica mentioned she used. It just does not make sense! Plus a team effort is really always the best solution! And being judged by our peers must be more equitable than having Jessica pick one person with who knows how little knowledge or how much experience or bias, to select the winners? We can make the process more palatable and acceptable and more fun if we can convince them to use a member team! Please help! Get in on the discussion in the blog! And ask your friends to too! Let's plead for a team of members to be used to select the challenge winners! Thanks, -Randy

David, it was so good to hear from you. Thanks so very much for your kind remark about "Cades Cove Sunrise," my POTD of several days ago. To say I have been overwhelmed by the response would be an understatement of gigantic proportions. I did want to reply to each member kind enough to comment, and let you know how much your approval and acceptance have meant to me. Again, thanks for helping make the day so special. Regards, Fred

Did you see the adds in the new Motor Trend advertising how you can go drive a Gallardo, an SLR McLaren, a F430, a Ford GT, and a Vantage all in one day? That would sure be a rush! I would need to where a diaper! If they add a Veyron and maybe a 911 twin turbo and a Murcielago...I'm going!

Hey David, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! I have never had someone visit and leave as many comments as you did today. Thanks a bunch for the visit and for your time. I agree about those Arizona summers -- that is a long cooking season!! I lived in Tucson for 13 years, but I miss the Sonoran desert big time!! I gotta know, is that icon picture of yours, your car??? If so, wow!! My wife had a '66 Mustang; needless to say years ago. I sure wish we had that car today!! Hey, again, thanks for the visit, you made for a great day! -Brent
