You folks and your liquors! lol!! well...If I had a choice for the rest of my days...I suppose I'd go with Gin and Tonic....But,Dave will have to tell me it's history, definitions...and brands so I don't make fatal error of imbibing of wrong one! lol! I remember..back in the day..(25 years ago) I used to order WELL drinks..(G.& T.'s) and, a well known politician at local pub was apalled at my choice and had pity on me and sent me the 'RIGHT' one... now, concerning Daves dissertaion below...I agree with him.... I just saw a news segmant...teens today are TEXTING so much (partial words and slang) that they don't know how to write anymore! Or read! The dumbing down of America. Apparently the over stimulation of text...phone...P.C. and instant messaging causes the brain to have a very difficult time focusing on a book or even story of any real length. I have seen this in my own 20 year old! She used to read 4-5 books a week!(voracious!) and now she said she can't focus or concentrate as well..and barely reads 1-2 a month..if that. It's also VERY hard to get her full attention in a conversation..she's usually texting..or typing on computer while talking to me...multi-tasking. I see this as a real break down in human relationships and communication! (ironically) It's EASY to say nasty things in a text or e.mail that you NEVER would in face to face. And it's easy to be indifferent and disconnected. It's sad....I wish people knew their neighbors and had face to face conversations again....the front porch days....I have a big front porch by the way....my house is over 100 years old. :) Now...if I could just find folks wanting to sit on it!...they're all gone long hours in my neighborhood...2 career households....well...the sun is shining so I better get out there and spruce up my yard...hope your day is full of blessings Mims! ~April

Ms Borogrove...Here's a disjointed extract from a piece I once wrote "These ghastly (politically correct) words and phrases will worm their way into our daily discourse until they eventually displace all the honest Anglo-Saxon words that have served us in good stead for centuries. And when that happens, our language will have become a wasteland of meaningless euphemism and the notions of truth, honesty and clarity will have vanished beneath the surface of a turgid morass of politically correct bullsh*t. For a classic example of the pernicious dangers posed by jargon that seeks to shroud the cruel truth in a confusing swirl of "culturally sensitive" smokescreen, we need only look at the word "shell-shocked." This was the term used during both World Wars and it referred, bluntly and honestly, to those soldiers who had been driven mad by the horrors of combat. Trouble was, to those who hate the truth, the term "shell-shocked" was too honest. It also implied what the generals did not wish to admit: that their troops were not supermen, but ordinary human beings who could be driven insane by the obscene carnage they witnessed on the battlefield. And so it came to pass, by the time of the Korean War in 1950, the phrase shell-shocked was replaced by "combat fatigue." The generals nodded their approval. Fatigue is a far softer word than shock. Soldiers were no longer whacked in the head; they were simply tired from exposure to too much noise and pain and blood and entrails and death and dismemberment. A couple of weeks of R&R and they'd be ready to go out and fight again. Then came Vietnam and a new groundswell of politically correct feeling. Out went combat fatigue and in its place we got "post-traumatic stress disorder syndrome." Fabulous. Five words instead of two, a string of psycho-medico mumbo-jumbo and a phrase so meaningless nobody paid any attention to it. Or, as comedian George Carlin noted: Perhaps if we'd kept on calling it shell-shock, those boys in Vietnam would have gotten the attention they needed."

That Leon. I read his stuff and my face makes a smile. A gift. I read his mind, he reads mine. Imagine if we ever met? "From this day to the ending of the world. We few, we happy few. We band of brothers. For he today, that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother". (Shakespeare, King Henry V). But enough of this idle, maudlin sentimentality. George Carlin. He did a whole thing on shell-shock. Charged (sic) my life. I'll look it up and send it to you...

Mimi! good morning...or Brunchtimeish there I suppose...I'm amazed at all the Irish folk hangin round my message board....Dave, Joanie..you....and I have Irish on my Dads side plus, Dutch, English, Cherokee (both sides) and French Canadian. (plus one Hollywood moviestar!) You talked about Canada too. This seems to be the year of the Irish in my life ...BOTH of my daughters had Irish boyfriends....'Fitzpatric k,and O'Neil'...about as Irish as it gets! I'm always fascinated with family history and roots...Well...about cameras...I was NOT into digital or computers for that matter and then as my photography skills picked up I saw the use for digital...took a class at local college on digital for beginners...and thru lots of research...ended up with a KodakEasyshare DX7440 It's VERY user friendly and great for those just begining yet high quality enough to get fabulous results! Mine was around 300.00 with all the hardware....but that was 2 years ago and now you can get a camera twice as good for about 100.00 less! I think my camera runs around 200.00 now. Also the company is great to deal with....AND after I bought it, a Pro. told me that Kodak is one of the ONLY companies in the world that still makes GLASS lenses manufactured in Germany. (the best!) I am VERY VERY happy with my camera...also has video features. Scanning is sooooo time-consuming...and tedious...you'll be amazed at how much faster digital is. well thats my pitch! lol! And about your curiosity...have also noticed this group has an abundance..thats what makes life interesting huh!? what's around the NEXT corner???? ~April ;)

Hi, Mimi...Thanks for checking out some of my photos. I have alot to learn about the ins and outs of photography. Also, glad you liked the Barbi story. I forgot to tell you that I loved your "barb" about Barbie! I see you are interested in astrology. I must admit I know litle about it except for some common knowledge regarding what traits one supposedly exhibits according to the their sign. I`m told I`m an atypical or quiet Leo. I don`t know...I think I have my moments! I do feel more comfortable writing than dealing with a whole crowd, but I hold my own and eventually get my point across. Anyway, I said I`d introduce myself to you properly, especially after my story for the mindless(May Barbie R.I.P). Talk to you soon....Joanie

Hi, Mimi. I was planning on introducing myself to you sooner, but when April told me your answer regarding origin of barbeque, I nearly dropped. As I told April, I had just finished writing this mindless ittle story about Barbie and Ken that I was going to send to Dave. But your mind beat me to it!! Anyway, Barbie and Ken decided to spend the day at the beach to enjoy lunch, get in some surfing(this was Malibu Barbie), catch some rays and just chill. When they arived they dug a hole in the sand, gathered sticks, twigs and such and lit a fire. They put a grate over it and Barbie started to unpack the food. Ken said he was going to try and catch some waves and to call him when lunch was ready(sexist Ken). Well, Ken was swimming out on his surfboard when he heard screaming from the shore. He hurried back to find Barbie had fallen in the firepit and melted beyond recognition! Her little plastic form resembled the letter "Q". Hence, the term Barbeque!! Okay, Mimi, promise I will be back to visit after I pick up my brain at the lab! Geez, what a way to introduce yourself to someone! Joanie

p.s. David Letterman...my birthday twin...had to tell you hilarious quote by him....and I KNOW he's saying this as a slam to Guns...(which I grew up around...) but...it's hilarious....he said..."Recently Charlton Heston admitted to having a drinking problem...and I said to myself..thank GOD this guy doesn't have any GUNS!!" (lol!!!)

okay...ya'll can shake yer groove thang now! lol!! just teasing...cuz..dancin is one of the arts I'm NOT good at!!!so I admire those who do!

yup! Mimi...thats your problem I'd bet with enlarging..I'm no scan expert..(tooo darned slow!) but You can't enlarge anything more than what it's loaded as.... (like your 4X6 pic)try re-scanning them larger if possible....if it's not possible..you may need a higher DPI. (dots per inch) resolution..on your pictures. My camera has a setting where I can take higher...quality (dpi) or lower. Lower...loads faster etc...but you really can't get great enlargements. oh....this is all way toooo techie huh!!! I'm boring you to death! On to other topics...1st..your profile pic is REALLY nice..I like this one! 2nd...I'm a Christian...that is not to say that I DON'T believe in astrology etc...au'contraire...I KNOW first hand there are other darker powers...But, in respect to God and his love for me I TRY to listen to his word to me and it instructs me not to experiment with those types of things...now that was all heavy duty huh! However....that being said..I don't mind the banter (ask Leo! LOL!)....and I'm April 12th...and Aries...like Leon. AND....God is no respecter of persons....and equally loves you...and everyone else as well as me. And..hey! we could definitely use a 7th Muskateer!!! thats a good number! I'm sincerely glad that you needed help the other day...and thankyou so much (ears burnin) for the really kind things you said to others about me! Everyone has been soooo amazing here.....hope your day is smoother and you make progress on pics! ~April :)

Hi. Thanks for the visit. Welcome any time. And be as familiar as you like :-) Thanks, too, for the background info: always helps to get a geographical/cultural frame of reference of one's correspondents. Re film vs digital: I know whereof you speak. I spent my life as a working photojournalist, travelling the world on assignment - and lugging around anything up to three SLR bodies and six lenses at a time. I, too, refused to even consider digital - especially as, in the early years, the quality was poor. Then, on the eve of a trip to France three years ago, I bought a 6-Magapixel Minolta & have never looked back. The advantages are huge: compact & easy to use, midrange models come with a single, fixed lens that offers me focal lengths I once had to use four or five different lenses to obtain. No film cannisters to lug around, no worries about airport X-rays fogging your film, no waiting for weeks on a trip, wondering if your never-to-be-repeated shots came out or not. Instant review of the shot you've just taken (and the chance to correct the image if needs be). Best of all for me: if you get a digital with anti-shake technology you can shoot low light or sunset shots without the need for tripod...something you could never do with an SLR. Do you know how difficult it is carting a tripod around with you on your travels?? The clincher for me was the discovery last year that National Geographic is now totally digital. Good enough for them - then it's sure good enough for me. If you need any advice, hints or tips, don't hesitate to yell - although I see ol' Quirks seems to have things covered in that regard. Bye. See you later - Dave

Oh, wow. The Quirkyartist has found you. Worse things could happen. Much worse. Better things could happen, too, I guess - but not many. Me - I'll take ol` Quirks anytime. A delight, a pleasure, a mind challenge - and sings like a nightingale. Edith Piaf meets Jill St John. If you wish to be alone and miserable and unfulfilled and forgotten - ignore Quirks. If you want to get involved with a real, caring, immensely cross-cultured talented human being...go with the lady. I did. And, as they say in the vodka adverts - the effect has been shattering :-
