Happy Valentine's Day dear Mary Ann for You and your husband! I hope that now your son has completely recovered from this bad disease; I am in a long overdue to thank You for the incredibly kind messages You sent in my recent albums!!! You have a special talent (that I admire and envy deeply!) to write in a perfect quite literary English and to guess what words can give the greatest pleasure to your correspondents!!! I know why: it is simply because You write with your heart...so sweet, so considerate! I am late to write and to visit all my other Friends too but You know the reason: I just hate to write when I feel not well or when I am suffering too much; On this subject, my legs have healed quite completely indeed after 3 months of daily nurse care and medical heavy treatments but the pain remains deeply and abnormally so I must go to the hospital to-morrow for an examination announced as very unpleasant of my legs nerves and muscles (with needles and electricity); I hope they will find out something to solve this problem quickly now! Have one more time the best Valentine's Day, with love to You and your little family, Jacques

Do you know of a good registry cleaner because I think that is the most important thing that is overlooked on the computer that gets so full of junk :-) Well it's late and I have to get up early so Take care my good friend and God Bless you and yours and keep you safe in His care :-) Your smiley friend Paul :-) P.S. I posted this in response to Mary Ann's keen coment on the empty crosses in Protestant churches as shown in my album. "Great observation, Mary Ann. My explanation for this difference between the Protestant and the Catholic belief lies in Mathew 28:13 "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." While both religions believed in the Ascention, the Catholics believe Jesus never left us. He resides in the Holy Sacrament that the Catholics partake during mass. Hence, you'll won't see an empty crucifix in the Catholic churches." "Noticeable in most Protestant churches or chapels (and your album shows this, too) is the unoccupied crucifix - symbolic of the risen Christ who now resides both in heaven and in the hearts of true Christian believers. The simple & clean lines in your photos seem to point to this simple truth - that Jesus is the Way, the Truth & the Life, and that He, too, is the Alpha & the Omega (beginning & end)! Ding, thank you for sharing this simple yet lovely album that seem to reveal a lot more than what meets the eye. A happy, healthy & hopeful New Year to you and your kin! God bless. ~~~Mary Ann" said maryan54 22 days ago

Dear John, Thank you for seeking permission to use my Batad photo. Of course you may use it for your magazine - hopefully, with the proper acknowledgement. Glad to be of help to your non-profit group. God bless. ~~~Mary Ann

Hello maryan54, First let me say, I think you take the right pictures. Keep it growing. How do I ask your permission to use one of your photos in small circulation magazine for a small non-profit organization? Its the Smoke-filled home, Batad, Banaue, Philippines. John D

Dear Pete, I wasn’t so sure what weapon you just described. However, when I showed my husband your query, he is aware that a rather innocuous-looking but no less deadly weapon was used by the “hacienderos” or wealthy landlords of huge tracts of plantation land or ranches. Yes, the long steel stilettos (which you described as “ice pick”) are sheathed in long rounded leather casings that look like riding batons used by horseback riders. Primarily used for defense, these stiletto-hidden batons were used by the landlords when they visit & inspect their vast tracts of land on horseback. Given the agrarian unrest of the 1930s to the 1950s, the need arose for such a defensive weapon (hidden and discreet) by the landed owners. But unlike regular stilettos, these long rods with pointed tips do not have cutting edges along the shaft. It is more of a square bar or round bar but with a pointed tip on one end. My husband does not know the name of this weapon. Only a few people (landlords only, I suppose) would possess this, and there are not too many of them. Mostly such a hidden weapon would be custom-made for the “haciendero” only, hence, this is not popular among the peasants, the pre-war army or private security forces under the landlord’s employ. Subic Naval Base and Clark Airbase are mostly surrounded by haciendas (large privately-owned plantations), so it is no surprise that your late uncle may have come across such a weapon, though not a popular one. Perhaps the weapon your late uncle got was a copy of an authentic weapon long used by these landlords. If I were you, I would rather keep that in your family as heirloom. The information I have thus provided you will have added more value to something you now have, and it would definitely make a good conversation piece. :-) Take care and God bless you. ~~~Mary Ann

Hello, hello hello, Mary Ann! It's so nice to see your smile. Love the new avatar!!! you look so pretty and healthy and happy! Just read your message on my Birds Eye View album. I did not feel it was a very good album...I put it together too quickly and should have taken more time to choose some more fitting photos, but I am elated to know you enjoyed the view. I'm so happy to see you around again. I hope your health stays on the good side for you for a long while. Happy New Year, Mary Ann! big hugs to you and to your family. Kelli

Maryan, I have a dangerous "ice pick" looking thing from the phillipines I believe. My late uncle was stationed there in the late 1940's/early 1950's and I think he brought it back from there. I see from one of the google books out there that there was much upheavel just after the war with land distribution/ agrarian reform and the beginnings of the communists there at that time. There were numerous "guards" protecting the interests of the rich and I'm thinking the objects that I have jpgs of were used either as part of guard's weaons or crowd control. IF YOU KNOW OF A PUBLIC MUSEUM THAT MIGHT WANT TO ADD THIS TO ITS COLLECTION, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I will e-mail or post this weapon for you to see. It's like an oversided ice pick that tapers to a sharp point. It has a leather holding case. Your shot with the machine gun on a pad made me think of this weapon but I have no way of knowing if it might be a teaching lesson for museum patrons w/o your help. Pete Smith Keene, NH

Congratulations, Maryan, for being webshots' top Philippine member as of 2008, with nearly 1.5 million views and more than 62 thousand downloads. Your Tagtag Ifugao Planting Ritual was also the most viewed album and the most downloaded album, according to http://www.webshots.com/members/travel/philippines.html I know these figures are just trivial to you, as what you relish is the sharing, encouragement and love within the community. But these figures are also a concrete evidence of how far you've risen in terms of the quality and relevance of your photography, which just started as a hobby. The poems and the information that you patiently includes with your photographs also deserve applause. Happy new year, Maryan, and wish you more power and time to take more photographs of our suffering but beautiful country.

Mabuhay Mary Ann, We have about 6 inches of snow, winds gusting to 40 mph and then to top it all off, last night we got a freezing rain storm, just to make sure I have to put on chains to get to work tomorrow morning! Yes, those UPS packages are still calling me to be sure they get delivered before Christmas!. Speaking of Christmas, have a blessed Christmas season, keeping Jesus himself as the center of it. After all, it was originally (and should still be) all about Him. Randy
