Thanks for your comment that you left me. I forgot to mention that when my dad was in the Navy, his ship docked in Hawaii. His ship sank a few years back. He served on the U.S.S Davidson.

Someday I'm going to get over there to see the Memorial in person - I'm afraid I'll be a sobbing mess tho - You may be interested as I'm very proud - my granddaughter spend a week at Annapolis this past summer - had to interview with the 'brass', have the academics, physical ability & community service to apply - she was selected and followed a cadet around to see if it would be the lifestyle she wanted. It was and someone high up called her recruiter saying 'get her here' - She's gotten her letters from the Senators etc. so is just waiting to hear if she gets an appointment. She even got her pilots license just before her 17th birthday - was quite a year for her. If/when I get over there I'll let you know - would love to meet you and you could show me where that pier is to photograph the Memorial. I have a cousin that lives a few miles away so can kill 2 birds with one stone. Take care and have a fabulous Christmas & New Year. Loree

Dearest Clark, Thank you so much for looking at my Yosemite album last Saturday, and your wonderful comments. Coming from the man who takes incredible sunset shots your comments were especially humbling. Your friendship and support is truly appreciated. With so many Yosemite albums around I never dreamt it would be featured. Ironically on the day the album was featured I bought a DSLR camera to replace my 4 year old, but trusty Canon S1 with which I've taken all my WS shots to date! Just when I've learnt how to use the old one, I'm starting over! Early but heartfelt season's greetings to you and yours. Thank you, Lorraine

Dear Sir, I am really thankful for your words. I really hope that this is a conversation instead of arguing. So, the Pink Panther is a postproduction ? Because I thought that was original !!! I might be stupid but that often happens to me watching photos. Normally I allways ensure that all photos are original, anyways. I like the photo a lot. But now, I have got a question concerning your military past. You can read in my profile that I had been watching Tom Clancy's The hunt for Red October lately again, and again, and again...it had its reasons. One day I loved Sean Connery as a Captain, the other day I enjoyed the dangerous undersea manouvers south from Iceland, but the strangest I one day found out was realizing that all US and all Russian submarine crew SMOKES onboard like crazy. Is smoking really allowed there ? Even Jack Ryan arriving onboard the US Dallas, just after he had been cought out from the icy Atlantic, gets asked, " Sir some coffee, cigarettes ? " But the biggest smoker is the Russian Chief Engineer. Sir, and if you ever come to Hungary, you have to try TurĂ³ Rudi, it is our best inland chocolate product. Until today, it has only been made by real ingridients. Actually, it is sweet cottage chees with bitter chocolate cover. You can buy it anywhere. Respect, Csaba

Szia from Hungary. I was gonna attack nobody with my comments yesterday. The pink panther up left is lovely but this has to be remembered for different reasons. I first saw this memorial as a kid, in a movie with Kirk Douglas,in which he commanded a US aircraft carrier on the Pacific when they got inside a magnetic storm to travel back in time. Dear Sir,I myself only worked on a river cruiser boat, the MS Vikng Spirit. But ever since, I always feel a special respect for ship officers, ship crews, because they are all poeple from cities and villages like all of us, but soon as they join their duties, they form a unity, a unity of which they will be remembered. Yesterday, for a moment, I remembered Sunday, 7/12/1941. Respect, Csaba

Clark, I've finally have an opportunity to spend some time to view your work. You have some very impressive images in your albums. Thanks for the Challenge Coin album. I really enjoyed it. As a retired Senior Chief, I really appreciated the shots of the memorials. You have a great eye for composition and lighting. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. My best regards, Srapada

I agree, too. The World War Two generation was the Greatest Generation. Those were the hard days, but glorified.

Thank you for your very nice message. I forgot to mention that my husband, now 81, is a WWII vet. He was in the army in the European theater at the end of the war with mop up from the Battle of the Bulge and was still dealing with sneaky Germans in white snow suits. Donna

Hi Clark; Thank you for the description of the Cypress knees. How amazing. After I asked, I also went on-line to look it up in Wikipeida. It just seems like the strangest thing to me as I have never seen anything like it. I also found out that there was a fellow who used to collect them and he actually had opened a musuem to display them. Isn't nature the most amazing thing? Mahalo, Marjie

Clark, you Hawaiian Huck Finn, thanks for the visit on my portrait album. I appreciate you speaking with your cousin about my lighting -- his answer makes sense. I too hope he joins WS, it would be cool to look at his work. I will have to check out that Beatles album cover for some ideas. I actually have a friend coming over and we are going to practice some studio lighting.. maybe I can give it a crack. Anyway, as I said before, it's great having you back! -Brent

Just talked with my father-in-law who remembers that an older resident had told him that there were two old minesweepers tied to the dock in the early 60's that the folks here got tired of keeping afloat and towed them to the back lagoon where one sits underwater with buoys to mark her dangerous presence - someone almost killed in a skiff when it hit the part of the bow that appears at lower tides. So it doesn't make sense that it's the USS Turkey since she was in Mass. in '68. I just love a good mystery.
said seawitchinak
Clark... I'm realizing that you are just the person I need to correctly identify that old minesweeper. My husband says that when the numbers used to be more visible, someone from here had done some research and thought it was the USS Turkey - One link I found shows her numbers to be 56. You can almost make out a 5 next to the 6 in my shot. http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/t9/turkey-ii.htm I really don't think it's the USS Cardinal because Chirikof Island is quite a jump across the Gulf of Alaska from here and up by Kodiak. Anything's possible tho. I sure would be interested in pinnning this down and I'm gonna go back there and see if I can out the numbers any better. One interesting thing about her is that she is full of old ring shanked, monel nails that have an anchor cast on the head.

I see you found me! Care to take a walk thru the Back Lagoon here in Port Alexander with me? To calm reflective waters where old fishing boats, including a WWII Minesweeper, return peacefully to the sea. We may even see deer and bear frequently visit the area. .....Let's go! http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/561613427gPmdbk I realize it's not a seasonal album but my weather has changed from monsoons to clear and oh! so! COLD! and I was able to finally upload something. Warmest Wishes -DJ

Here I am again. Just had another quick journey through your beautiful album and certainly made some more comments, but I don't know which one I commented on that you deleted, so you are going to have to help me out here and give me the link to it, so I know exactly where to go. Have a good weekend Clark and enjoy your nice balmy weather and think of me out scraping my car and running it for ten minutes before I dare take it out in traffic. Hugs, Marion

Hi Clark. I will go back and have another look at your photographs. Wish I knew which one you deleted. I do have a tripod. A real beauty. It's a Manfrotto. I didn't get their lightest one because the cost was just way too much. I also have a remote and when I use them there is a marked difference in my shots. However, because we flew to Las Vegas (or is that lost wages, no we did not play the slots) I did not take it. We did take it to the Oregon Coast but because we had a really packed car and four of us all wanting to go this way and that, I didn't get a chance to use it. Next time it will just be Ray and I and not such a hasty trip. I did use it in all of the shots I took in my Vancouver Island album though. Did I tell you that I have had two pictures published? I work for the Credit Union here on the island and we have 21 branches and 600 employees. Marketing called for "photographers" to submit their best pictures depicting Vancouver Island for our 2008 calendar. So I submitted 10 of my pictures and they choose 2 for the calendar, which isn't bad considering only 12 pictures were choosen and there was only supposed to be one choosen for each individual. Is it calender or calendar?? They paid me $100.00 per picture, so that was pretty cool. So I took that money and purchased a plug in for my Corel Paint Shop Pro (which is really intended for PhotoShop) and it is called Nik Color Efex Pro 3. I have had fun with it so far as is shown in the latest album I just posted. I called it "Artfully done, some filter experiments. Will see how it translates to my landscape shots. It is -1C here tonight and going to -7C. That's freezing and about 19 or 20 F. Then tomorrow morning the sun will be out and by the afternoon the snow is going to start falling, so I am hoping for some good pictures. I will be working tomorrow and then after work off to my great grandson's first birthday celebration. My how the time flies. That is your little grandson in your new profile shot isn't it??
