Was station @ NKP in 73-74, hooch was near Dusty area. Great pic's brings back a lot of memories. Worked on flightline as EC-47 mech while there, went TDY to Udorn to work on T-28's for 3 months. Went out a few times with NCO bar maid Soda (me and lord knows how many others ha ha). Seen a video of what NKP looks like now not much left. Remember John Boy Dusty mascot dog had Charlie for a Houseboy. Spent a lot of time in the Hooch Bar. Ate a lot of Kow Pot from the Thai resturant and remember their little Honda's they used for hooch deliveries (way ahead of the times those Thai's were). Remember the Pizza place down town too. Of course remember the Avon girls never ventured there though always thankful of that ha ha. Seems like when you see pic's your mind wanders back to yester year. Still have copy of the base map they gave us when we first arrived. Great stuff to remember though. Would like to return sometime after retirement.

NKP May 67-Dec 67 What an experience 56th FMS in the Hydraulics and Air shop. This set of pictures brought back lots of old memories... many of them,,, eats, smells, girls, Thai pilots getting shot out of the sky over Laos while training on T58's, red mud, Singhi Beer, rot gut whisky, the hottest food I've ever touched, much less eaten, the girls ad "Johnny's" (I'll never forget "toy"), did I mention red mud, food poisioning from drinking from a rusty Nehi Can; F-4's with hung bombs landing on the psp while we stupidly stood around watching, getting shot, at riding to town on teh bus, missing curfew and having to hustle to find a place to stay teh night in town, an old hag of a teelok, booze rations, houseboy, airmens club, wood shop and trying to build a white picket fence for the CO... Geez, this is a memory overload...

I was deployed to NKP in '67 with the 21st Helo Sq. I was assigned to the A&E Squadron and found that me and TSgt Farmer were the only people on base with our AFSC. They let us work out of the ARRS avionics shop for our entire tour. I arrived there, and 6 month later I found out I had made E4 before I had ever gotten there, but it hadn't caught up to me. That was a nice paycheck. When I got back to the states I found out that I made E5. Everybody was bailing out.

Sawadee I was a Dusty 73-74 I saw your great pictures and saw the one showing the Dusty's hooch. So I lived right across the yard from you. Do you remember our dog (John Dog) I think everyone on base new that mean little dog. I know the SP's did cause he hated them lol. Don't wear camo's around that dog he will bite you thinking your security police. Your pictures brought back alot of old memorys. I most likely met you at one time or another. I remember the first day I was there. I went to take a shower and one of the house girls came in to take one too. Man I was turning all colors of red lol. I didn't know what the heck was going on. I guess I was a FNG. Thanks again for the photos and memorys. Dunk

Thanks for all the memories...I worked in Intel from 74-75. Sure would like to contact Sgt B. Cruz (she worked for the base commander). Played alot of softball and went to Bangkok for OSI special duty for a few months. What a wonderful girl (roundeye) and the experience of a lifetime in Thailand.

Thanks for sharing. I was an admin E-4 in the 56 MMS there Sep 71 - Sep 72. Had a tealock, a monkey and a place in town. I used to sneak the monkey onto the base from time to time, my tealock wouldn't fit into my gym bag. These were some of the best times that I don't remember. I'll try to scan some of my small collection of photo's and post them.

Hey RoastedBrick. The name of the beer was Singhi and I drank a mnay of them in Johnny's. I was in NKP from June 68 till June 69 with the gun shop as a 46250 installing the guns and bomb racks in the A-26 and A-1E with a bunch of great guy's. This site allows you to remember back at a lot of things you did back then.

I was at NKP from June73- Dec74 as an CH53 crew chief (Dustys). Your pictures brought back a lot of memories. Especially when I saw the picture of the housegirls. When I saw them, I knew that your hootch was very close to mine. We had the same housegirls. The picture taken looking straight out your hooth door across at the Dust Devils hootch nailed it down. Even though I lived downtown at Johnny's Bungalow, my "offical" residance was the door on the left side of the picture. Thanks for sharing

I was with the 23RD Tass OV-10 Bronco's in 1969.The old base sure did change in 6 years. Bob Hope came up with Neil Armstrong and brought a huge cake he shared with the NCO Club. That was the last time I saw him in my 20 years in the Air Force.

Sawadee to all of you puchi and puying. I was with the 1987 Comm Sq. NKP from March 74-75. I have to say that for the last 30 years little bits of my NKP experience have crept up periodically but since two nights ago a flood of memory has returned. I came across John Sweet's very good site Friday night at about 1 am and haven't stopped reliving (in my head) so many of my experiences there. I was mapping out a business trip in GA for next week and for some unknown reason decided to map out Nakhon Phanom. I just wanted to see if maybe I could run across one of places I had visited. Hey Hestertank..yes I remember Roses Country Bar very well but I wasn't into country music at the time but went there some. I usually went to a place called Johnny's Bungalow...it was on one of the side streets somewhat out of town. There wasn't a band there, just a comfortable place to sit back and drink a few "?", I can't remember the beer's name, help me out guys!!! I met a wonderful tealoc, Penny (LaMoon) there. I remember the momasan use to sit in the bar and eat Thai peppers all the time. She also had good connections for some fine Thai "sticks"...gee, only 5 cents each. Saw one darn good band, I believe they called themselves "Mountain", they were Phillipno I believe. Played Pink Floyd like David Gilmour and Roger Waters were up there with them. The bar I saw them at was more like an auditorium when you walked in. It was wide open with the stage taking up the end of the place. I remember the F*** Y** lizards. I think my 3rd-4th night I stayed downtown, woke up and there was a lizard on the ceiling waiting for mosquitoes. What an experience. As I said I was with the 1987 Comm Sq. as a communication specialist. I worked at a complex off in the corner of the base away from everything else. You either had to ride in a truck over there or there was a narrow sidewalk through the base "jungle" that you could walk. I just remember the place was fenced in and the walls of the place were heavy poured concrete. I do know one squadron in there was responsible for getting info from infiltrators, etc. Can't remember what squadron that was. I worked at AFSSO (Air Force Special Security Office). We were responsible for transmitting information derived from infiltrators, investigators, etc. about mainly Cambodia at the time. Not much was going on in Vietnam, at least not till April '75. A lot of the messages were about the Khmer Rouge. Such as their arriving at a hamlet, killing the hamlet chief, and then killing the men and boys. A lot of numbers about Cambodian KIA's etc, river boat attacks, sortie missions and whatever else war entails. I worked 12 hours shifts, 3Swings-3Days-3Mids-3Days Off. I never liked that schedule. I sat and typed the intelligence for 12 hours straight and pretty soon you didn't read anything, you just typed it. My direct supervisor was SSgt Bo Roberts. He was a large guy and was the best softball pitcher NKP ever saw. Anyone remember him? Darn, sitting here running off at the mouth, sorry. Take care all and the reunion in Aug '06 sounds like a possibility. I don't have the war stories to tell as most of you do, but I'm a damn good listener. Peace... I was the 40th ARRS maintenance officer at NKP 68-69. I learned of this site from the sister of FAC Lee Harley (MIA May 1966) while on a flight from Tennessee to Raleigh/Durham 17 July 05. I'm wearing SSgt Charley King's bracelet (12/25/68). During my tour, the base road got paved and the base commander outlawed the possession of green paint - apparently his staff car got tagged a couple of times. Jolly Green footprints climbed the water tower (those PJ's were supermen). I'm the guy who 3rd Group threatened bad things if I didn't paint the bottom of the Jolly Green HH-3's back to the AFR 10-4 paint scheme (white). So we did. Then when 3rd Group weenies returned to Saigon, we repainted the bottom of the Jollie's camo again. Much fewer hits from ground fire. Remember a nickel a tical.
