  • YOu have captured some amazing visual images here. So timeless. I love the way yOu have captured the sunset on the face and the pillars, beautifully framing the old and new of Jerusalem at sunset.

  • Really like the new photos you have just added...the camels, the church, the sunset especially the dome it is just brilliant. You have captured some wonderful images yet again, from a fellow grunt in Australia.

  • Hi Leon, I visited this album a few days ago and left you a comment but I can't see it now... Thanks for visiting my Twilight Time album. You're invited to visit us again and see the sunsets of Tel-Aviv, and the rest of the country. It changed a lot since you visited us in the seventies. Meanwhile you're invited to see some more of Israel in some of my other albums. Shalom from Israel, Yair.

  • Hi Leon! I came across your album, and what a treasure it is! You have went into Israel so deeply, as dear Bella has expressed so well. Your collection is a fascinating time capsule. Thank you so much for sharing. Best wishes from Israel, Orly

  • Hi Leon, Thanks for your visit. Sorry, I didn't receive an email for your message so it took me a while to notice it. I don't know Amit Ron. I'm glad you liked my photos of Haifa. I only live here for 3 years but feel as if all my life has been here. Love this city. If you return for a visit, let me know and I'd invite you for an ice-cream. Best, Orly

  • Hi Leon, it seems you spent a long time with us and during the Yom Kippur war, not the perfect time to stay here... I hope you'll visit Israel so you can see how it changed in the last 30 years. Take care, Yair.

Now I found this wonderful photo work of yours, and it brought me back to those days when I served the army as a reserve during the Yom-Kipur war In the African part of Egypt, and after 6 months when the African part was lefted, I was for few weeks in Sinai. I spent my time in Sharam-A-shech, traveling to Santa-Catarina and many more places. Thanks for bringing me back to those memorys. RAN

  • Hi Leon, thanks for visiting my Bicycles album. I did not add any description to this album since Webshots limits us to only a short description. In the Fotki version I added this description which gives some more meaning to the album: "Next week we have Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is the Jewish day of repentance, considered to be the holiest and most solemn day of the year. In Israel, public non-observance (such as eating or driving a motor vehicle) is taboo. Yom Kippur has the nickname "Festival of Bicycles", referring to children's practice of freely riding their bicycles in the streets without motor vehicles presenting danger."

  • These were probably the worst days to be in Israel. I was 9 then but can remember it clearly. I still have some recordings on a tape with news reports in the radio on the first days but don't feel like listening to them... too depressing.

  • Leon...this album...like aging wine just seems to improve with time...such a slice of history! There's something to be said for the old ways of photography. It adds something rich, that is lost now with our slick perfect digital age. I really enjoyed this so much...as many others will to come. ~April

  • Just realized something as I viewed this Leon...I always had friends of varying ages...and 3 of my closest friends, stayed in a Kibbutz as volunteers, twice in Israel! Years would have been...'79' to..'81' Funny...I had dream about one of the girls last night or probably wouldn't have remembered at all! Six degrees of seperation....wow. small world really.

  • Hi Leon, this is an album to contemplate. You transport me to what was a less complex time, only now I know how the story will unfold. Your studies of people are excellent. This is a great slice of history, and a beautiful document; well done, and thanks for giving us a chance to look back and contemplate. Cheers, Keith.

  • In 1973, having just graduated from high school, two of my older brothers away, serving and surviving in Viet Nam, I was young, vivacious, curious about the world...at that time in my life other countries and cultures were fascination and intrigue, and I studied world history and language with a great passion I still hold...just testing my wings, exploring the mainland, and seeing life through the innocent eyes of a nine year old...I still do...and here with this collection I see at that moment of time and space, you exploring a culture with an apparent deep understanding, respect and affinity for the diversified landscape and peoples, submerging enough for a lasting impact and imprint in your life and the lives you touched for the difference you make, I am convinced they remember you as well. It is profoundly meaningful and moving to view the images here with this quality collection, and experience this great land and culture through your eyes and lens, Leon, a poet and a photographer is a good combination. It is real. Good onya ~ Sharon

  • Amazing to see what jewels are there to be discovered on Webshots. Leon - I have to say I just loved this album. Every picture tells a story! It's always great to find pictures that bring the past back alive; so I'm really grateful for everybody who goes through the effort of scanning in their old shots - and sharing them with the rest of us.

  • Leon, it was such a pleasure going back in time in history. For me these pictures are a reminder of the news then when I was ploughing the seas. Like I mentioned, I have been round the world but never set foot in Israel. Your photos have taken me back in time and allowed me to visit part of Israel with you at that time. Regards from Paul in Ontario, Canada.

  • Oh my goodness Leon! Thank you ever so much!!! Your pics capturing a moment in time has ignited emotions deep in my soul. I was in Dahab in 1981-82 and you took me right back there. My camera was lost shortly after I left the desert in 1982 and I have not seen a picture of place since. I have longed to see a picture of Dahab when it was an oasis before becoming the city that it is today. I stayed in Dahab for 2 months. The hut I rented from the Bedouins was situated very close to The Crazy Camel Cafe (for those reading this, The Crazy Camel Cafe of 1982 that was owned by the French Family was not the same place as today's modern Crazy Camel Campground). I got to know the "Hippy Child" and "Hippy Children" in your photo. I distinctly remember the little boy's face but have since forgotten his name. I could not believe my eyes. For me, seeing the children again is better than any picture I could ever see of Dahab. I have told my friends stories of Dahab and the French Children. I could have never anticipated seeing a picture of them, let alone such a captivating image. If my memory is correct, I believe that since your pictures were taken, there has been an addition to the family with the arrival of a baby sister. She must have been about 2 years old at the time of my visit. Feel free to contact me if you would like to share some fond memories of the place and time or if you might have any additional photos. I would be ever so grateful and would love to see a photo of The Crazy Camel Cafe during its hay day if anyone might have such a shot. Leon, your photos touched my heart and I thank you so much for that. Wishing you the very best of everything. Esther.
