Hi Sylvia! I don't know if you remember or not, but the last week of June 2004 there was a young female Doberman at MAS; a friend of mine in East TN wanted to adopt her so a volunteer with Dobe Rescue went and paid this girl's bail out fee. The shelter vet called and said she didn't want to spay this dog because it turned out that she had a bad case of heartworms, had been shot in the back leg at close range, and her tibia was broken completely in two. When I was finally able to go get her out, she was a bag of bones (you could see all her ribs and her spine through her skin). She now lives with her mother and two Dobe brothers in the mountains in East Tennessee and her name is Keanu. She has had two surgeries on her leg at a cost of close to $2,000 (she doesn't need any future surgery), has been cured of heartworms, and is now doing physical therapy to build her leg muscles back up. Her mother and Dobe brothers all think Keanu is the grandest thing! I want to email you pictures of this gorgeous girl who surely would have been put to sleep because of her severe injuries and poor health. Keanu does not even resemble the dog she was only 8 weeks ago today. Please email me at tparris65@aol.com and let me know your email address so I can send the pics to you. Thank you for all you do -- this is proof positive that you all are wonderful! Traci Parris

Hi Sylvia, I left a message in another guest book but I found this one . I adopted a puppy in Noahs Ark in New Jersey and I believe he came from the Memphis shelter . he was called Samson and was about 8 months old when you posted his picture. A shepard mix and lovable. He got his shots at a Philippi WV vet and made it to a no kill shelter in New Jersey where i fell in love with him. Would you know any info at all about him while he was there, like how he came to be in that shelter to begin with? pleasse e mail me at Maxiey@aol.com with any info you can think of. Thanks D Hansen

the successes must help you to deal with the other end of abandoned pets...it breaks my heart to view your "gone but not forgotten" pictures...I just had my 7 month old lab/border collie mix spayed even though she would have had beautiful pups...there are so many who need good homes...I salute you for your strength and good work...Vermont Judy

What an excellent idea to advertise animal adoption ... in webshots! Hopefully being featured will escelate more good stuff to happen. Enjoyed hearing the wonderful stories of the animals brought into good homes and loving parents. I really feel for the ones who had to be PTS...so sad! I cried while viewing the "gone but not forgotten albums". Wish I could take them all home. I was shocked to see how many dogs you had. Where we live, most of the animals at the shelter is cats/kittens. Nuturing/spaying is so important. I wish you a lot of continued success and keep the good stuff coming! From Windsor, Canada

Dear Kristie. I read about the black lab the was depressed and died. I had a cat, I had to give up because thay, didn't allow animals in my apartment.muffy was the only companion I had after I lost my husband of 25 years. the people don't relise how much you can love an animal. There as close to you as family. And I do beleave Muffy was begging me to please keep her but I had to put her on a farm. she was never seen again.I miss her so much. how can anyone hert or leave an animal. there so good to people, if thay are treated right. thought you would like my say so.

just wanted to let you know that the 12yr old boston terrier i adopted passed away about 2 weeks after i adopted him. turns out he had the early stages of alzheimers and a possible brain tumor. he also had a thyroid problem. my vet did everything in her power to bring him back to good health, but it was just his time. he could no longer walk and was having problems breathing and so i had to make the hardest choice in my life and have him put to sleep. i was with him the entire time and my vet did it in such a loving and caring way. i miss the little fella and so do my other boston terriers but he's now in doggie heaven playing with all the other doggies.

i'm the one who adopted the 12yr old boston terrier. as soon as i have time i will post a pic of him. the shelter people were rude. when they went to give him his shots the guy kept poking the dog in his back with the needle before he even gave it the shot. they even tried to talk my sister out of adopting him!! i had her go get him b/c i had work. he ate food like he was never fed. he is such a good dog and likes going for walks. he even goes and tries to get his leash off the hook when he wants to outside. he snores up a storm too. i also got my friend to adopt the border collie and i've been trying to find someone to adopt the weimeramers.

I looked at at all of your albums with tears in the gone but not forgotten. I can't believe the idiotic beaurocrats that run animal shelters. I feel for the lady that lost her chow before she got to pick him up. And the puppies. The shelter policy should state that there is no consistent policy because we're burned -out A__holes that don't know what we're doing from day to day and we actually do it the eenie meenie miney mo method on who lives and who dies. In this album, Louie is a Plott hound or a Black and Tan Coonhound mix. His face was a dead give away. The supposed brindle chow mix is an italian greyhound or whippet mix. These guys need to take a class on how to identify mix breeds which are out there. I almost took one a year ago. They should have the giant encyclepedia of dogs book. I rescued a redbone from Lawrenceville, GA shelter a couple of weeks ago. The owners couldn't afford to get her and her mother out. The mother was adopted on Sat and the one I got was scheduled to be PTS. I called on monday and had her on tues. The owner had a collar with phone number on it. I called him to let him know that I had his dog and that she almost was PTS. I talked with him for awhile and it turned out that she was AKC reg and was 10 mos old. The shelter had her a 2 yrs old. I knew she wasn't that old because her teets were very small and her teeth were very clean like just came in adult teethies. I lucked out getting her because I almost adopted a male redbone in TN just the week before. He was in a no kill shelter and someone is SC wanted him just as bad as I did. I decided to let the guy have him since he was next to get him if I didn't and good thing I did because this little sweetie could have died. I may one day rescue another hound as they are truly great for my young son. They seem to get along with young children better than my shelties do. I admire what you are doing and I will keep you in my thoughts. Email me sometime. I know some rescue people that you may not know with shepherds and herding breeds. CoonhoundCentral.com would be your best bet to get the hounds a home. Just look in their Orphan section and look at the requests for hounds. Some that are asking for pups will most likely take an adult if they know more about the dog. Take care Sylvia Cox, Robin Davis, Hurt, VA Oak Glen Shelties and one redbone rescue named Maggie.

On March 7 you posted a pic of a 4 month old Aust. shep/ jack russell mix. You posted that he had been adopted. I am happy to report that my daughter adopted him and he is doing great! Her dog had to be put down in December and we have beenn looking for the right dog ever since. She knew he was the one as soon as she laid eyes on him. I tried to get her to think about it for 24 hours, but she cried and begged. I gave in only after making it clear that if he did not get along with our other dogs and cats, or her little sisters that she would have to foster him until we could adopt him out to a loving family. I am so glad I gave in! He is wonderful and he is great with my other animals and kids. We picked him up on March 11 and while we were there a man was in to surrender his pets, one of which was a baby bunny. Last summer our pet rabbit of 10 years died. I'm sure you know the rest. Yes, I brought her home too! We had a huge rabbit cage just going to waste and I could not let that happen. She is also doing great. Now they both have 5 little girls to love them and give them plenty of attention. Probably more attention than they had in mind!! Just wanted to give you some good news!!! You do great work! Thanks, Kristie

Sylvia, my husband and I adopted Kerra, who you've posted on your site, back in in August. She is the most loveable dog I've ever had. We have a chocolate lab and they get along great. I always tell people about this web site and the wonderful animals they can find here. Kerra was transported all the way to Connecticut, and she is doing just great in her new home. Thanks again for helping these wonderful animals.

Just to let you know that the aussie #92200 was rescued with the help of many people in the Memphis area. He will be transported to Nashville tomorrow where I will meet him for the rest of the trip to east Tennessee. He will have a 150 acre farm and no more cages. He will go with me to rescue another dog in northeast Tennessee this weekend. Thanks to everyone and thank you for the photo you posted of him.

Sylvia, I just called and the Beagle in cage 310 is still up for adoption. I have a 6 year old lab and a 1 year old boxer. From what you can tell do you think she would get along with other dogs or do you think she would do better as an only dog? She just looks so scared and I would not want to overwhelm her with the other dogs in our home. Our boxer is still young and loves to play. Thanks for your help! Holly holiver@ducks.org

Dear Sylvia: I am from Canada and didn't adopt an animal in this shelter but I just wanted to say " Keep up the good work God will Bless you for your kindness" I did adopt a Yorkie Mom that was rescued from a Puppy Mill in December 2001. I was very touched by our Yorkie's trust in the human race even after all she was put through. They beleive she is approx. 5 years old - can you imagine living that long in a Puppy Mill? We are very glad that she has opened her heart and given us her trust. We can't imagine our home without our little yorkie hoping to greet us. She cannot run as of yet but she hops around at a very fast pace. Keep hope alive for all those adorable pets that wants a home - pictures are worth a thousand words.

Dear Sylvia, Thank you so much for the great work you do. It is so heartbreaking to see all the beautiful dogs that are put to sleep at this shelter every day. We adopted a Border Collie mix that you helped to rescue last year. His name is Trout ( I believe Jean or Chris named him that). He was pulled from the shelter September 29th and flown to Cambridge, MA in October where Chris Turner kept him in foster care. We adopted Trout on December 16th 2001. He is by far the smartest dog we have ever owned. He is loyal and loving and we cannot imagine life without him. We only wish we had more space in our home (Trout is one of 2 dogs) to save some more wonderful pets. Your work is very important and we thank you for saving our beautiful dog's life and providing us with a great canine friend! Dave and Marie Wenling, Hull, MA

Hi Sylvia, You know the text of what Judge Alan Glenn said to those animal abusers is still making the rounds with lots of kudos. If we could think of some kind of recognition for him, would you convey it to him, whatever it is - like "first annual companion animal man of the year award" and I am sure that rescue people across the country would want to add their names to it. and if you could get the news people in memphis to give you coverage, it might also be an opportunity to draw attention to the homeless pets that you work so hard for. What do you think? lots of folks would have sent him email congratulations but there was no email address for him - so it would not be a redundant effort.

Sylvia: Thank you so much for all the work you do to make sure truly wonderful dogs get out of the overcrowded, understaffed memphis animal shelter. We already had two rescued dogs, Elvis (2 years) and Polk Salad Annie (seven months), but checked out petfinder.com regularly. Ace saw a terrier mix you posted as about to be put down and called the Memphis shelter July 1. They told him she had been adopted. On July 3, she was still on the site and we had a bad feeling so Ace called back. First they said she had been adopted and then said no, that she had been put down. We were so upset that we drove from Oxford, Miss., to Memphis that afternoon, intent on at least saving one dog -- we'd picked out an aussie mix pup on the site. But when we went back to the cages, there was the terrier, very much alive and in the cage you listed, scared and waiting for someone to take her home. She nearly scratched us bloody she wanted to get out of there so bad. We took it as a sign and named her Lucky. But then there was the Aussie mix we had already picked out before we knew the terrier was still alive. He was roly-poly, sweet and smart. Two cages down, we found his sister, who had a bad cough and looked scared. They were so happy to see each other again that we couldn't leave her behind. Long story short, we left that afternoon with all three. We convinced them to let us go without waiting to get them spayed and neutered since their vet was out for a long holiday weekend. We drove straight to our vet in Oxford and were glad that we did -- they all had kennel cough, and the aussie mix female had parvo as well. Had she waited in the shelter that weekend for the shelter vet to get back on monday, she would've died. Lucky, Rufus and Carla are all happy, healthy and living the good life at our farm outside Oxford. Without you, we're convinced that all three of them would be dead -- they all had been in adoption cages way longer than usual. Thanks so much, Sylvia!
