  • Wow! How sad to see Pruem Air Station looking like a ghost town! It was hard to see the disrepair, especially the barracks which were built during my tour of duty there. Pruem was the best assignment of my military experience. I have so many wonderful memories of that place and the people I came to know; both military and local. It will always be dear to my heart. Tonight I will go home and drink a Bitburger Beer and toast the memory of my little Air Station.

  • I was stationed at Prum from 79-82. The best assignment I had. Most will agree, it was a great place to be. Two of my 3 daughters were born at Bitburg hospital. Thanks for the pictures! If you want to see what the base looked like 20-25 yrs ago, go to www.prumairs.org It is a website by and for people who were stationed at Prum. Lots of pictures, guest book. If you want to know what things were, there is the place for answers. I see someone already informed you that the ramp was for the radar. And I did many loads of clothes in that laundry facility!

  • This brings back a lot of memories for me. My father was stationed at Pruem in the education office in around 1961. Besides the housing area the only other buildings were the small commisary/movie theatre (which I believe is this building) and the school which was at the top of the hill and we had to climb a million stairs to get to. My family was first housed in the attic where we had a huge apartment with 8 bedrooms (old maid quarters), then we were moved down to regular quarters after a while. There was in incident in the playground where a little boy was shoved off the slide and sustained head injuries and had to be flown to Landstuhl for treatment. Also, I saw the scarriest horror flick of my life (at the time, I was only 10) in the theatre which was in the back of the commisary and we all sat on fold up metal chairs. I remember my Dad telling us that Pruem had been blown up a couple of times during the war and most of the town had been rebuilt several times. The place is quite remote.

  • Hi. Thanks for sharing your pictures of Pruem. Although I must admit it makes me sad to see it in such a state. I was stationed there from 86 to 88 as a member of the 601st TCS (Tactical Control Squadron.) We were (at the time) a forward mobile radar control unit supported by a flight and also stationed with a DET unit (the DET, a communications group, was not attached to us... just sharing space and the owners of the tower.) I was enlisted and lived in the dorm that you took pictures of. Most of us who lived in the dorm were around 20 to 24 years old, single, and partied a lot! After all, we were really close to being a remote assignment so working and hanging out were the easy options. We had all of the neccessaries there; a mini BX, commisary, bar, offices, gym, baseball field, trucks, and all of the AF suff. As for the ramp, that was where the radar, the AN/TPS-43 lived when we were home. Thanks again for sharing!
