  • In 1949 Claude and I met at the Circle Caissa chess club. We became friends, and for a year shared together some of the life of young students in Paris. I was entertained at his parent's appartment at 110 Rue de Neuilly and still remember the marvelous oriental art. He took me to the appartment of his widowed maternal grandmother. Claude gave me instructional tours at art museums and I took him to concerts to expand his appreciation of music. His intelligence and wit were always evident. However, he always found it harrd to understand how a non mathematician like me could beat him most of the time at chess. We lost contact with each other in the early 1960's. I recall getting a card notifying me of the death of his 12 year old son. I often thought of him and the months of our youth which we spent together. I always planned to get back in touch. This evening, on an impulse, I searched for him on "Google&quot ; and came accross this excellent memorial album. It was a shock to realize that I had waited too long. I may have a picture or two of Claude circa 1950, and if there is any interest I would be happy to search for it. Farewell, old friend!
