I also remember buying crates of bier from the brewery outlet at the end of the back road...I am planning a trip with my wife for September...I may stop there to see it...doesn't seem like it has changed very much.

I also remember trying to explore the underground "Hangars" near the north end of the base...the entrances were mostly bricked over, but some you could fit through...unfortunately 40 years of silt falling through the cracks made for dirt up to the ceiling...I found another entrance in the south end, while we did an on site field problem in the corner of the base for a weekend. One of our trucks found a soft area of asphalt, and we realized it was empty underneath...found a lot of interesting things , circa 1938 down there...still remember what it smelled like...

I was station3d at Gieb from 85-87 at C 6/52ADA. We lived in the old WWII German barracks, not pictured here. I had no problems recognizing the Headstart education building, the main guard office, and admin building for 3rd Inf Div. AHB folks, (at least back then). It brought back instant memories of my time there, both on our TAC site, and occasionally locking our radars on the cobra or blackhawk guys to watch the looks on their faces, (and fingers) once they realized it was us...we could see them in our TAS cameras...good times, mostly friendly fun.

My son is on base at Geibelstock now. This site lets me feel a little closer to him. At least I can see the streets he sees every day and have some sense of the adventures that wait for him there. Thanks a bunch for the postings and pictures

I was with B Co., 3rd ABC, from 83-85. I still consider my time there (and in Germany) as some of the best of my life. My CO was named Pearson, I believe. Same person, by chance? I immediately recognized almost every photograph. I have several myself, but they're on film and not scanned. The stories another person relates about the painted sheep I was told, also. I very much want to go back. Thanks for the site.

I flew with A Co. 3d Avn Bn Cbt at Gielebstadt in 81 and 82. Had UH-1s and OH-58's at the time but saw the arrival of the first blackhawks in theater just before I left. Was one of the best assignments I had in my 22 years in the Army. Lived in the BOQ on an All-Others tour. We moved the unit there from Kitzingen AAF in Feb 81 in the snow and cold. Great airfield with a super USAF Wx Det and operations which were, at that time, in a hanger. Looking at these pictures, I can hardly recognize some of the area but the HQ building is about the same save for the memorial. Don't think the place was as busy then. Really enjoy the pictures!!

I was stationed in Gieb from 8/02-2/03 as part of Force Protection. The photos are a great reminder of my time there but I really think you should remove the one of the gate. The soldiers living there deserve a little more descretion for their safety.

I was stationed at Giebelstadt in the late 70's with the 3rd bn 67th ADA. Your photos brought back alot of memories and I enjoyed them very much. I found it curious that there was no mention of the extensive underground tunnels and other buildings on the base. They were mostly sealed up/locked and were strictly off limits. We did "explore&quo t; some of them anyway and legend said that a very large underground hospital was also present. I did enter there once but it was way to delapidated and dangerous to do much exploring. There was also a legend regarding how the germans hid the airstrips in WW2. They painted them to match the surrounding vegitation and even painted sheep on them. The plan worked well and the base remained undetected untill near the end of the war when someone comparing recon photographs taken at different dates noticed that the sheep didn't move! I don't know how true that was but it made a good story. Again I wish to thank you for taking the time and putting your pictures and website up for us! I did have a question, we used to buy kegs of Jeager Pils Beer from a nearby brewery. I have been trying for a long time to establish somekind of contact with them. Can You help me with that? Thanks, Robert Van Antwerp bobvanant@yahoo.com

I spent from Nov'63 til Apr'66 in Giebelstadt with the 602nd AC&W. Married and lived on the economy in Wuertzburg for awhile. We have many wonderful memories of our time there and with the many local families we got to know. Urgen Motchielder and Herbert Pohlman were good friends along with many others whose names no longer come to me. I was sent home on emergency leave and didn't get a chance to say goodbye. I would love to get in touch again. I would love to see more pictures of the base.

Some of the buildings & objects pictured seem familure, others not. I left Giebelstadt in Sept 1953. Thanks for the chance to view them.
