    • pete, loved the new photos. i can't wait to get back out there. they could be a great presentation to State Parks for preserving the area as a botanical/geological natural area. what do you think?

    • hi mike. i just sent you an email w/ a next hike proposal. to tell the truth, i'm not sure about the walnut, BUT the nuts are hard as basalt and it's definitely not the english walnut which pops up all over my garden thanks to some overzealous and not-very-pc squirrels [go native! i shout at them and they just twitch their tales and go on planting invasive species all over my garden. when WILL they get the message!] i had heard that english walnuts were planted w/ california black walnut rootstock? i'm not familiar w/ the eastern walnut - just butternut and pignut.

    • pete, i noticed your black walnut tree shots. how can one differentiate between native black walnut and eastern black walnut? I've tried keying them out but the characteristics are so similar I can't make a final determination. I know many pioneers brought e. walnut out west as root stock for english walnut orchards. if the ones you saw are indeed our natives, i'd like to collect some nuts and grow them out. when is our next hike? Mike
