My family and I were stationed at Spang from 2001 - 2005. We lived in Bitburg housing and got to see all of the transfomration of the base while we were there. I found your pics while searching for something else and this really brings backs lots of memories. Part of me wants to get stationed there again, but I think I will settle for trips to visit. Man, I miss the autobahn doing 150km.

Thank you for allowing me to live through you and your family. The pictures you have taken bring back such great memories. My ex-husband and I were stationed at Bitburg until it closed. Then deverted to Spang. for the remainder of our time. We were there from 93'-97' and loved it. Please, please keep the pictures coming you can never see to many pictures of europe. Hopefully I will get back over there soon. KENYA SMITH

We were stationed at Spangdahlem 50 years ago this month! Brought back some great memories. Thanks for sharing your photos~All the Best, Terence Sutherland 1/56/1/60 Spang/9/56-1/60 Bitburg HS Dad (T/Sgt David L Sutherland)was base editor of the Photogram, Spangdahlem. We lived in bldg 11-C-2, the first bldg on the right coming into base housing. From what I understand, they will be tearing down the buildings and replacing them with new ones. Sad...

Man this stuff really brings back some memories! Thank you so much for sharing. I was stationed at Spangdahlem from '88-'91 where I was a crew chief on a F4G - Wild Weasel with the 7081st TFS (later became the 81st TFS) at the bottom of the hill. We used to love to eat a Mom's in Spang Town and I lived in Badem. I used to love driving in that area; the drive into the base or over to Bitburg (to the McDonald's to get a QPw/C) because it is such a beautiful area. Some of the best memories of my life were created right there in that area. If you have more pics of Spangdalem I would love to see them. Your albums are truly awesome, thanks again for sharing and for the trip down memory lane.

Wow, did they ever change the balconies! If you go back, I'd love it if you could take pics of Buildings 36(the far left stairwell, 4th floor is where we lived) and Building 48 the middle stair well, 2nd floor is also where we lived. I sure would love to go back, now that we have children to share places. There is a Bakery Just up the street that makes the most delicious sandwiches! We were there from Jan 94 to Jan 97. Tara

Thank you so much. My heart is aching for all the wonderful times we had in Grmany from 83-87. My husband was stationed at Bitburg. We were raising our 3 daughters, they went to school at the elementary school on Bitburg. We lived in Irrel the whole 4+ years we were there. Actually we went to the Stausee and stayed in a bungalow until we found our house in Irrel. The exchange rate was real good 4dm-1$ so it was affordable to live off base. That was great because we were able to soak up a lot of the culture. We lived on the main street; when you got off the highway on the left a big pink (at the time) house. We built a big snowman one winter and dressed it up as a cowboy and the neighbors got a big kick out of that. We attended a small church, Emmanuel House, down on the Fusgang of Bitburg. The Pastor still has the church, his name is Dieter Bahr, and he lives in Bollendorf which is the town on the German side of that border crossing you were talking about. The river is the border line between Germany and Luxembourg, Echternach being in Lux. Well anyway so many memories and I really hope we get to go back some day. Thanks for posting pics that relieve all our concerns that nothing we remember would still be the same! God Bless YOU!

Even after 40+ years things at Bitburg look sooo familiar too me. I noticed the bins that used to be on the front of the buildings are gone. They were used to store coal which was for our heating. But of course things have changed for the better. Well some things. :) And found out we didn't live in Wiesbaden before housing. It was a place called Echternach. And that is where the border was with guards that crossed over a river. We lived across from a meat market on a narrow street that I believe was brick or stone of some sort. Used to watch them bring skinned critters in on their shoulders. My sister and I used to be so bad. :( We would visit the Cathedral near by and snitch the fountain coins to buy Gummi Bears. :) Shame on us. I have never tasted any candy as good as what they had over there. Makes my mouth water. :)

I was looking at the picture facing up the hill going to the bx in Bitburg housing, church is on the right further up the hill? Theater in frort center? My dad and my family was stationed in Bitburg 1970-1974 I think Building 48 is to your direct left at this intersection facing up the hill? We lived in 48 a-2 for those 4 years. Wouldnt mind seeing a picture of the building now. Funny how even after over 30 years things still look familure, even for an 6-10 year old kid. scott@aplusroofingco.com Longmont Colorado

I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face. I lived at Bitburg in the late 50's for 3 years with my parents and 3 siblings. I have always wanted to see the area again and was afraid to because I just knew so much had changed. But that theater looks so much like the one I went to as a child. And I recognized the housing...we lived in the set of buildings that had the only hill for sledding...it was actually the road leading down into the complex but it was sure a blast. I would have loved to have seen that again but always afraid it would erase the memories I had. I remember two black stone objects straight out into the field as you came into the complex...we would climb into the pipes and crawl through them...dangerous I am sure now...but hopefully those were not for sewer at the time. UGHHH! My father worked at the hospital and stayed in the military for 30 years. They are now retired and living in Florida. He's now 80 years old. I remember once I play hookie from school and he opened the hospital door and asked what I was doing. I fibbed and said we were on a field trip. I had a jar just filled with what I remember to be June Bugs. When we first moved there we lived in Wiesbaden...my school bus was a Volkswagen van. There was a gate with guards that we had to pass through on our way to Wiesbaden I believe over a fast moving river...a river I will never forget but thanks to my sister I am still alive today after a slip. I remember during the night having to go into the basement of the building which was used for family storage...it was for air raid warnings and testing I believe. I remember hearing the sirens going off. My parents said that usually last for an hour and then we were able to go back upstairs to our homes. These pictures have me so emotional but I thank you so very much for posting them. I am saving them and will share them with my family. You've made me so very happy. With heartfelt thanks...Cindy

Like the others I also stumbled upon your site by accident. Was at Bitburg from 83 to 87, our son was born at the base hospital. During our tour there it was home to the 22nd, 53rd and 525 TFS. Your photos sure brought back lots of very pleasant memories. Thank you for putting up your site. Dave

I was so thrilled to find your photos. Thanks so much for a stroll down memory lane. I was stationed at Bit (labor and delivery nurse for 2 years 1988-1990) and loved every minute of it. Some things have not changed, but many things have. Thanks again for taking me back.

WOW !! This brought back some great memories. I didnt think I would get to see my old barracks again (Army area), but you showed the road and the actual building I lived in from 92 - 94 when we were moved to Hanau due to the drawdown. This was my first assignment out of boot and it is still very special to me. Thank you.

I lived there from 1990 until sept 1994 (when they closed the base). I was only 11 then, but i really missed that place. I remembered back then I was so pissed off that the air force closed bitburg and left spangdalem open. It looks like not much has changed; I lived in bldg 36 (of the housing area) and I can still remember running to the burger bar in the bx area. it would take me about 6 minutes to get there if i ran. thanks for the memories.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I was stationed at Bitburg AB 1988-1990 and seeing these pictures brought back so many wonderful memories. It was one of the best times of my life and it is so good to know that most of the buildings are exactly as they were 15 years ago. Thanks again!

Hi, I found your website by accident - just looking for pics of Bit hospital, my son was born there, need them for the scrapbook- and was so excited to see your pics and made me realize how much I miss Germany and Bit/Spang. We just got home in June 2004. Funny, Carmen (cars1979s) and I are best friends, and she's never told me about your site, great minds think alike, I guess... Anyway, thanks for the great pics, we were there for 3 years and didn't think to take some of the ones you have on here... I've sent a link to alot of our family so they can actually see some of the things my husband and I told them about.... Take Care!

I was stationed in Bitburg in the early 90's, was there until they closed it. So did they reopen it or combine it with Spang? And that building you say is a hotel now (used to be Army) - is correct. It was an Army site, that was there barracks and they had a small mess hall. Please respond, love looking at the pictures, brings back great Air Force memories. Take care! Sharlene
