Hallo, Dwelt in the Pirmasens area from 79-82 but out of town. Thanks for the pictures. I go to Germany on business but I've never made it back to that neck of the woods. We used to go down in to a valley past the water tower to a cave that had cold water coming out into a stone bowl-type feature, toss the Parkbraus in there and hang out all day.

Enjoyed your photos of Zweibrucken & Pirmasens. My husband and I went to jr. high in Pirmasens in 1959-60! I lived in Zweibrucken from 1957-60 (my father was in Air Force) & I went to 7th & 8th grade in Zwei, but they bussed us to Pirmasens for 9th (at that time Zwei was strictly 1st through 8th grades) My husband's dad was in Army and stationed at Pirmasens. We went back to Germany in Oct. 2006 and made a special trip to Pirmasens & Zwei. Sadly, much of the kaserne at Pirmasens is gone - they put a highway through part of it and we couldn't find the school, snack bar or px. We did find his quarters. However, Zweibrucken still has the school, chapel, theater, gym, all the quarters, and many of the ops bldgs (where my father worked). I even went into my old quarters (they are gutted but in process of refurbishing). As they renovate them German families move in and the finished ones look very good. It really brought back many happy memories. Just wish the school in Pirmasens was still there. Sandra - Arlington, Texas dnwinkles@hotmail.com

Much like jackiekopp, I was stationed at Kruzberg Kaserne in Sunny Zwei from 1975-1978 and stayed there working in a civilian capacity until 1979. Also was married in Denmark in a town called Kolding to a lady who was stationed on Kruzberg as well in 1977. What fabulous memories these photos bring back, I not real familiar with Pirmasens or the AFB in Zwei, but was at both of them during my 4 1/2 years. I found a web site (i don't have it handy right now) a couple years ago that showed the construction on Kruzberg and exactly where the old "Rod and Gun club" once stood, man if i could have a buck for every hour I spent there. I have many photos myself, and if i ever find some time I'll find out what it would take to upload them to a page similar to yours wbread99. They are mostly in and around Kruzberg Kaserne and downtown Zweibruecken. I was originally from California, and upon being stationed in Sunny Zwei, it left such an impression on me, my wife and I named our 3rd and final child, a girl, Cali Brueck. Nicely done and thank you once again!

Wow, thanks for these photos. I attended high school at Zweibrucken and lived in Pirm from 81-85. I married in Denmark and lived in Pirm afterward until my new husband and I returned to the states. It really brought back memories and made me a little sad to see the closed up buildings. Thanks!

I was stationed in Pirmasens from 1988-1994. I was a Desk Sergeant and MP Investigator at the MP Station, which was adjacent to the main entrance. I lived in a beautiful little town Muenchweiler, about 6 miles east. I had planned to retire and live there, but after the Berlin Wall went down they started pulling troops out and closed Pirmasens and I had to leave. I really miss the area and hope to return someday for a visit. I loved your photos. Thanks, SSG William J. Mallett USA Ret

I worked at the F-4 modline from '79 - '83. Went back in 86 working at Ramstein and visited some friends. When I Went back in 99 working at Rhein Main and Ramstein visited Zwei and noticed the Brewery was gone. Thanks for the pics, I will get some photos out when I'm off travel and get some posted.

Those pictures did bring back memories for me although I was probably among the last of the soldiers to be stationed there before they closed. When I was there, they moved most of the few remaining units to Miesau due to the fact that our unit was in an old paint building and we were all exposed to lead. I think the medical unit was in a newer building and therefore stayed behind. This was around September-October of 99. I do not know if the place is truly closed down, but most of the property was turned back over to the German government then. Wow, I really miss that place.

This was a wonderful trip down memory lane for me. The pictures are wonderful and sad at the same time. I was stationed at Zweibrucken AB from 1984-1986. I made many trips to Pirmasens, the Rosengarden, downtown Zweibrucken and many other places. Actually made it to France from Germany when we could still cross the border with a military ID. How did you end up there?

I was stationed at the AB from 79 to 81 in the 26th TRW. I used to play broomball at the ice rink and drink BBKs at the Bavarian Inn. I had some good times at the consolidated club there as well. I have some old photos I'll try and upload. I went back several years ago for work and saw how the base and town has changed - no more Parkbrau brewery in town. The base is a small public air field with an outlet mall near where the ice rink was (it's still there). I didn't notice if the totem poles were still on base. The town hasn't prospered as well, but hasn't fallen into disrepair either. The town people are still fine folk and it's always a pleasant stop to visit when I can get back in country. It's full of fond memories.

Wow... your photos sure brings back memories. I was stationed at Husterhohe from 79-82. I recall spending my leisure time at the rec. center. Pre-McD's days used to grab a bite from the "hole in the wall" imbiss across from the main gate. I hope to one day re-visit Pirm. Thanks a Mil for sharing your photos and taking me back to a time and place of treasured memories.

Picture # 30 is Firma Lange. A new building in the old 400 area. The company produces small aircrafts. The green buildings in the back are 422 and 426. One was used by the Sec. Pol. for storage.

Concerning the photo that shows some large buildings and a caption that says the only thing in the building is a gym. Well those buildings on the left were SS barracks during the war and after the war they were home to the 79th Engineer Battalion. The building on the right was the chow hall and PX.

I happened to visit Germany in 2002 and I went to Pirmasens. It was bitter sweet, to see all the buildings still there but empty brought a tear to my eye. I was staioned there for two years (62-64) and loved every minute of it.

Maybe you or one of the other messangers can help me in my quest! I stumbled on your Pirmasens photos through a Google Search. I have a friend who was stationed there in the early 60's. We were recently in a shop in Fredericksburg, Tx, that sold beer steins (German). He remembered from his time at Pirmasens that there was a brewery there, and he asked the store manager if they had any steins from Pirmasens or that brewery. They didn't. I decided to try to locate one (if I could). Does anyone know the name of the brewery that was there in 1962? I would settle for stein or anything memorable from Pirmasens. His birthday (63) is coming up soon, and I would love to surprise him with something from the past. He remembers his tour of duty there very fondly. Please send any information or suggestions to me at lrbabcock@satx.rr.com

Thank you for the photos!!! I lived in Munichweiller, about 5 miles away from Pirmases. My father was in the Army, and as a kid I went to school in Zweibrucken. I went to Pirmases all the time (the buses ran until about midnight) because Pirm had the DYA there. I was sad to hear that Pirm is closed, I miss all the fun times there. Yes, even though Pirmases was tiny, I still had fun there. I can add some light to the shot of Route 10: That was the main drag though Pirmases, and to the right of your the shot was temp housing - for incoming and outgoing service members. The bus stop I used to travel everywhere was at the top of the hill and to the right of the photo. Thank you for the chance to see that again - it really means a lot.

Hello There, I was looking with some amount of interest at your pictures of Pirmasens. I was an Army brat whose pop was stationed there from 1963-1965 I particulary remembered the base housing.. and the Kaserne...my pop was stationed there. We had been stationed in Germany before in K-Town 1952-56 lived in base housing there..and lived with a German family in Alsenborn at first. The one picture you have in there asking whether or not this is a church or a Theater... I believe it was a theater..at least what I can remember. We left Pirmasens in 1965, and I haven't been back there since. I almost immediately went into the service myself..stationed at Tan Son Nhut AFB, Saigon... It brought back a lot of memories.. Thanks!

My father was stationed in Pirmasens and we lived there for four years. Your pictures brought back some wonderful memories even more since my father has passed away. I LOVED living in Germany and frequently participated in all of the DYA activities. I was actually in school there when they opened their new school, which was a tall 2-story building, and we made a quilt (Ms. Ginny Vail's class) for future students to see. I'm not sure if the old baseball field is still there but the outfield fence had a big black metal pipe on the top of it that ran the entire length of the fence. As a kid I hit my first homerun on that field and the ball bounced on that poll and went over (I actually left a dent on it). I lived in the apartment that you show off of hwy 10 on the first floor across from the red truck (if its the second building from the traffic light) I can't tell if the building you are requesting help is, is actually the chapel, but if there is a hill to the left of it with a baseball field at the bottom (Chapel Hill) it is the chapel. We would spend many hours sledding down that hill during winters as a kid. I can go on forever, but thanks again for the pictures. If you have any more pictures of Pirmasens and are able to email them to me I would love to see them my email is wilocastillo@hotmail.com Thank you so much.

This is really cool. My father was stationed in Zweibrucken from 71-75. I went to Junoir High School on the base. My father worked on the F4 and the RF4. Some of the pictures look like a holding area for the F4 that carried nukes! Our there any pic's of the army base accross the valley? I remember the enterance to the base that on the right side coming into the base was a big hill. I also lived behind the base in Dietershing (Spelled wrong).

Really a cool bunch of pics! Thanks for sharing them... when I was Stationed at Zweibrucken in the mid 80s I was young and stupid and didn't think that I'd ever want pictures, so I didn't take very many. Building #2 in your collection was "The club" and was opened in the spring of 1986. I spent many a wonderful evening there getting drunk with my friends, playing the slots and talking with Ginny, the bartender. Many of the other unidentified buildings in your pictures look familiar and if I think of what they were in the day I'll let you know.

Enjoyed your photos of Pirmeasans ... brought back memories ... especially the "back in the day" part. :) I was there back in the day with my ex-husband. We were there from mid 1966 to early 1968. Do you have any idea when it closed? Is the school still there? I worked at the "teen club" at lunch, after school and evenings and weekends when they were open for the kids. Then our youngest son started his tour in Germany at Zweibrucken abt 1990 (I think). Thanks for the memories. Lynda - Illinois
